Andrew Gillin

Featured Lawyer

Personal Injury Law

1625 The Alameda, 511, San Jose, CA 95126

Attorney Andy Gillin is a founding partner of GJEL Accident Attorneys. Raised in Southern California, he moved north to attend U.C. Berkeley in the late 1960s. During his time at U.C. Berkeley, Andy studied under two distinguished legal scholars, Jacobus tenBroek and Al Bendich, whom he greatly admired. After Andy received his bachelor’s degree, he decided to attend the University of Chicago, where he received his Juris Doctor. Following graduation, he returned to the Bay Area and joined the San Mateo County Legal Aid Society. Through this opportunity, he began his legal career as a public service attorney, primarily working for low-income families and individuals. A couple of years later, Andy received a call from one of his previous mentors asking whether he’d be interested in personal injury law. Over time, personal injury became a primary focus as an extension for the work Andy did for people in need, leading to the founding of GJEL in 1972. During his career, Andy has written and lectured extensively on personal injury topics—including settlement strategies and trial practice—for several organizations. This includes the California Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) as well as other professional groups. He even wrote a guide for young attorneys for the first hundred days of a major case published in the California Trial Lawyers Syllabus. Andy also has experience practicing in both state and federal courts and is an active member of many legal organizations, such as the American Association for Justice, the State Bar of California, and the California Trial Lawyers Association. Due to his impressive track record and dedication to ethical standards, Andy holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He has also been included in several top listings, including Super Lawyers and the Best Lawyers in America. Since starting GJEL, Andy has helped hundreds of injured plaintiffs fight for their recovery. With several case settlements and verdicts exceeding $1,000,000, Andy understands how life-changing personal injuries can be. One of his most notable cases, a class action against Tenet Healthcare Corporation, involved patients receiving unnecessary surgeries at Redding Medical Center in 2002. The lawsuit consisted of a total of 769 claims, 183 of which were brought by GJEL. Not only did GJEL clients receive $117 million in damages, but the lawsuit caused a major overhaul of Tenet’s corporate governance. Through this class action, Andy and the GJEL team were able to make a positive change to the operations and standards of Tenet, reducing the risk of similar injuries happening in the future. As managing partner, Andy spends his day consulting on all the different cases accepted by the firm, discussing strategies and tactics with his fellow partners. He loves being deeply involved with cases and collaborating with other attorneys at the firm. When he’s not in the office, he enjoys spending time with his friends and family and listening to classic rock music. You’ll likely find him walking around the neighborhood early in the morning listening to classics by Janis Joplin and The Youngbloods on his headphones.

Personal Injury Law

17500 Red Hill Avenue, #100, Irvine, CA 92614

Candice M. Bond is the Managing Partner of Bond Legal PC. In 2008, she founded the firm, which has been rebranded to fulfill her nationwide mission to help and assist victims across the US who suffer from catastrophic injuries caused by negligent, irresponsible parties. Candice was raised by her single mother in Louisiana. When she was just 8, Candice and her mother were in a serious car accident and her mother suffered life-changing injuries. She witnessed how someone else’s negligence can alter the course of a family forever. She questioned the intentions of the attorneys involved and quickly learned how insurance companies have motives too. From her family’s tragedy, Candice realized early in life that people need lawyers who genuinely care about their lives and their tragedies. She now guides Bond Legal as a national catastrophic legal advocacy and philanthropist. The firm represents and protects catastrophic injured clients throughout the country. Fighting for catastrophically injured victims gives Candice meaning and the fuel to fight even harder. She knows that the moment a family is faced with a catastrophic injury their lives are instantly changed forever, whether the injury is fatal or permanently disabling. She understands how their jobs, marriages and future are impacted. She knows how these families face financial devastation from medical bills and a loss of income. This is the fight Candice has passionately battled for, as a child and as the leader of Bond Legal. She lives her life as an advocate for every single person she takes on as a client. However, Candice cannot help some victims legally. The negligent party may not have insurance or enough insurance to cover the damages they created. Or, they may not have enough assets to cover a loss. Candice ensures that Bond Legal continues its catastrophic philanthropy on a national scale, providing relief with donations, scholarships and pro bono legal services.

Dan Schaar

Dan Schaar

Distinguished Lawyer

Personal Injury Law

1010 Fair Ave., Suite H, Santa Cruz, CA 95060

Dan’s path to becoming a trial lawyer definitely didn’t take the “traditional” route. Originally from Rapid City, SD, with a love for soccer, he was the first person from his high school to be offered an opportunity to play at the Division 1 level. Unfortunately, an injury towards the middle of his freshman year knocked him down to a level he was not able to recover from, and 2 years later, he hung up his cleats. While things worked out for him in the long run, he has never forgotten what it was like to have hopes and dreams dashed due to injury. After college, he became a SCUBA Instructor, picked up his gear, and jumped on a boat to the Cayman Islands where he spent almost 4 years teaching diving and working his way up to earn his civilian United States Coast Guard 50 Ton Master Captain’s License. While in the Cayman Islands he also worked on a number of local conservation projects, which further instilled in him the idea of always finding time to give back to his community. Dan attended law school at Santa Clara University, where he not only served as President of the Student Bar Association, but also lead a group of 25 students to post-Katrina New Orleans, to help that community in the rebuilding process. He has taken his commitment to people and the community to the courtroom, where his results speak for themselves. He takes on the most challenging of cases, often times after other attorneys have stated these cases are “unwinnable.” He has achieved multiple six- and seven-figure results, including one of California’s largest slip/fall verdicts–$2.8 million—in 2016. This verdict was followed-up in 2017 with a $6.8 million verdict on behalf of an injured bicyclist. This is the largest reported personal injury verdict in the history of Santa Cruz County, and was the largest verdict in California in 2017 on behalf of an injured bicyclist. His results have continued into 2018 and 2019, where he consistently holds insurance companies accountable for full justice at trial, often to the tune of many, many times higher than the final pre-trial offers.
