Richard W. Hughes is a partner in the Santa Fe office of the law firm of Rothstein Donatelli LLP. A graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A., 1967) and the Yale Law School (LL.B., 1971), Mr. Hughes spent eight years on the Navajo Indian Reservation with DNA–People’s Legal Services, first as a staff attorney in Shiprock, then as Director of Litigation, before moving to Albuquerque to help found the firm of Luebben & Hughes, whose practice was almost exclusively in the field of federal Indian law. In 1988 he joined the Rothstein law firm in Santa Fe as a partner, and started the firm’s Indian law practice. He has since continued to carry on a practice focused primarily on Indian law, tribal representation and complex civil litigation, including land claims, water rights, jurisdictional disputes, and business transactions. He co-authored a book on Pueblo lands, and has authored several law review articles on Indian law topics.
