Mike had an interesting childhood growing up as the son of an oil field worker. He lived in numerous places across the country and world including Texas, Alaska, Singapore and the Middle East. He graduated from high school at the Singapore American School, and it was during his attendance there, where he first learned the importance of government and the rule of law from his favorite teacher. From that point forward, Mike’s goal was to become an attorney. Mike was the first person in his family to attend college and enrolled at Lamar University. He had learned the importance of a good work ethic from his father and knew that his ability to complete his degree required getting a job. Mike was and always has been a people person, so he found that police work not only provided an income, but it also was the first job he had where he was able to help people. Mike’s experience as a police officer enabled him to see another side of the legal system and furthered his desire to become an attorney. Since becoming an attorney over thirty-five years ago, Mike’s focus throughout his career has remained on helping people who have been wronged. He has handled a wide variety of cases including individuals injured in accidents, citizens harmed by financial institutions misusing their money, people harmed by the use of tobacco products and insured homeowners and business owners whose properties were damaged by hurricanes and windstorms. Of his many successes, one was in the 1990’s when he was part of the team that sued the tobacco industry which resulted in a historic civil litigation settlement of $15.3 billion, plus an additional $3.3 billion for legal costs. Mike’s work ethic and professional relationships resulted in the settlement of thousands of cases on behalf of the insureds against their insurance companies following Hurricane Rita in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in 2008. Mike has been affiliated with several law firms prior to establishing the Ramsey Law Firm in April 2016. He started his career at Townsley, Bush & Ramsey where he worked from 1981 – 1988, was a partner at Bush, Lewis Ramsey & Roebuck from 1989 – 1995, served as an equity partner at Provost Umphrey Law Firm from 1995 – 2005, and was Of Counsel to Mostyn Law, where he managed the firm’s Beaumont office from 2005-2015. Mike is among approximately 10% of attorneys in Texas who are Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Mike believes community involvement and support is an important commitment to make, and to that end has served as Chair of the Lamar University Board of Regents, a Director of Community Bank of Texas and in 2001 was elected by his peers to serve as President of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association. Mike has been married to Myla for over 40 years and together they have three children, Katherine (attorney), Melissa (Licensed Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist) and Michael (Chief of Staff to State Representative Ramón Romero, Jr.). Mike enjoys traveling, spending time with his family and friends, and playing with his two miniature Australian Shepherd dogs.
