Cloyd is a retired Army infantry officer, having served over twenty-three years leading American soldiers in the United States, Germany, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon. He brings that same sense of duty to his clients in his practice of law. Prior to Founding Smith Trial Law, Cloyd worked at a popular law firm in Prince William County and a prestigious law firm in Fairfax, Virginia where his practice concentrated on complex civil litigation with a focus on business litigation and Trust and Estate Litigation. Within his first year of practicing Trust and Estate Litigation, Cloyd won a case of first impression in the Virginia Supreme Court successfully arguing that a trust is not a contract that can be enforced against a beneficiary under the Federal Arbitration Act or the Virginia Uniform Arbitration Act. Anderson v. Boyle, 301 Va. 52 (2022). Cloyd lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and has four children: Sara, Caitlyn, Chloe, and Liam.

Mr. Smith is a highly-experienced securities lawyer, chief compliance officer, and business attorney with over 23 years of experience strengthening the legal and compliance functions of investment advisers, broker-dealers, and investment vehicles. He has also represented companies at all stages of maturity with their capital and debt raising efforts via private offerings and public offerings. He has also served as Chief Legal Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for NorthRock Partners LLC and Virtue Capital Management LLC; Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of RIA Compliance Firm LLC, and Founder and Managing Attorney for LawVisory. He previously served as Chief Compliance Officer of Griffin Capital Company LLC and Research Affiliates LLC, where he also served as Assistant General Counsel.

Mr. Smith has many years of courtroom and trial litigation experience trying simple to serious, complex cases. In the Appellate Court, he argued before the Georgia Supreme Court in State v. Kenneth Williams (S19G0005).

Tyler B. Smith, a native of Huntington, West Virginia, is a litigation attorney with eleven years of experience. He recently worked as a sole practitioner engaged in a general trial practice. Mr. Smith served as interim Huntington Municipal Judge. A graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelor of Regents Degree, he received his Juris Doctor degree from Toledo College of Law in 2003. He is a member of the West Virginia State Bar Association and the Ohio State Bar Association. Mr. Smith is also a former member of the Board of Directors of the Huntington, West Virginia Area Habitat for Humanity where he served as Vice President and President.
