Tom began trying insurance defense cases almost immediately upon graduation from law school. He quickly developed a reputation as a trial lawyer, trying all types of cases ranging from automobile accidents, slip-and-falls, arsons, construction claims, and products liability. Tom’s reputation for relating to jurors encouraged other attorneys to refer clients with personal injury claims to him. Tom has successfully represented clients on both sides of the courtroom and sincerely believes that trying cases from both perspectives allows him to more thoroughly and objectively guide his clients through litigation. Tom’s experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants, combined with his reputation for reasonableness, has lead to a successful practice as a mediator. Tom received an “AV” rating from Martindale-Hubbell at a relatively young age and continues to hold this highest designation. He has also been listed in the Kentucky Super Lawyers listing from 2008 – 2018, The Best Lawyers in America and Top 100 Trial Lawyers. He has served as a Special Justice to the Kentucky Supreme Court and was fortunate to write the opinion. For S.J. Khalsa, the essence of estate law isn’t found in dry legal texts or lifeless documents. Rather, it is found in the application of estate planning techniques to accomplish some of the most fundamental missions in society—fortifying families, protecting legacies, and ensuring that the dreams parents have for their children are not lost because of poor planning or procrastination. Mr. Khalsa takes the time to get to know you as an individual, to learn about your hopes and preferences; to understand what makes you comfortable and what makes you most proud about your life and family. That’s the foundation. He then combines a superb mastery of the law with the legal experience he has gained since his admission to the Bar in 1974 to create an estate plan that’s not only technically sound, but is animated by your spirit and the values that define you—your work ethic, your devotion to your family, and your generosity. Adding an extra dimension to this expertise, Mr. Khalsa is a recognized authority on the special planning needs of parents of children with special needs. Mr. Khalsa has been in private practice in New York since 1974. Over the years, his areas of practice have included business and commercial matters, the rights of the disabled and those with special needs, nonprofit organizations and education law, in addition to a wide range of estate planning specialties, including: Living Trusts, Asset Protection, Charitable Trusts, Family Limited Partnerships, Business Succession Planning, and trusts for children with special needs. He is a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys. He is a past president of the Sikh Lawyers Bar Association and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Asian American Bar Association. Mr. Khalsa has been an arbitrator in the New York City courts and was nominated for the position of Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York. He is admitted to practice Law in Colorado and New York, the U.S. District Courts in both states and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has served as an aide to the late United States Senator John Sparkman. Mr. Khalsa earned his Juris Doctorate from the Washington College of Law at the American University in Washington, D.C., in 1971. He received his bachelor’s degree in marketing and business administration at the University of Alabama.
