Alex Smith graduated from Middletown High School in 1969. He received a BA in political science from Ohio University in 1973. He received a JD from Albany Law School in 1977, after spending two years of writing for the Albany Law Review; two of his articles were published. Alex was licensed to practice law in New York in 1978. He has since become a member of the bars of the United States Supreme Court, the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of New York. For the past 30 years, Alex has engaged in trial and appellate practice in the Federal and State courts, concentrating in the fields of civil rights, criminal, municipal and land use law. Alex is currently the part-time Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Middletown; he has been the Assistant or Corporation Counsel for Middletown since 1993. From 1996 to 2000, he was the part-time Attorney for the Town of Greenville.

Gary F. Smith received his Juris Doctor degree from Fordham University School of Law with honors in 1973 and was admitted to the New York State bar in 1974. Since then, he has continuously engaged in the private practice of law on Long Island and in Manhattan. As a corporate attorney in Manhattan, Gary F. Smith was a partner in a midtown law firm. In 1979, he opened his first private law office and has engaged in the private practice of law in Nassau and Suffolk counties since that time.
