After graduating college, Travis served full-time as a commissioned police officer in the Oklahoma City Police Department. He served in various roles ranging from patrol to investigations. As a detective, Travis was tasked with investigating crimes committed against children, including child homicides. Travis earned many commendations from his department, including a Life-Saving Award and the Medal of Honor—the department's highest mark of distinction—for his heroic actions during an officer-involved shooting. After more than a decade of service, Travis honorably retired at the rank of Detective Sergeant and formed the law firm Bennett Vernier. While on the force, Travis attended law school at night.
