Herbert Chestnut received his undergraduate degree from Georgia Southern University in 1979. He received his doctorate degree in 1982 from the Walter F. George school of law at Mercer University, graduating in the top 20% of his class. He is a three-time winner of Georgia Workers' Compensation Attorney of the Year and received the AV Preeminent rating. This rating is based on peer reviews from other attorneys, with only 10% of all attorneys holding this rating. He was admitted to the Savannah Bar Association in 1982 and the Bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1987. Mr. Chestnut moved his practice from Atlanta to Savannah in 2021 to concentrate on longshore claims and Georgia workers' compensation claims. He has expanded his practice to include social security, consumer protection, and fair debt collection.

He was also recruited to serve on the National Advisory Board for the University of Buffalo Law School’s Advocacy Institute, which was designed to develop litigation skills of law students to successfully advocate on behalf of future clients.
