Born and raised on the prairie of Western Minnesota, Jason spent his summers on his uncle’s farm, which taught him the importance of getting the job done right the first time. While still a high school student, Jason enlisted in the Army Reserve and went on to serve as an Army Intelligence Analyst after graduation. Then he pursued his education at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, becoming a High School social studies teacher in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. During this time, he realized his deep-rooted desire to help others resolve their problems, which led him to follow his dream to become a lawyer. In 2000, Jason graduated from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. After gaining valuable experience at the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, Jason realized the crucial need for personalized attention and genuine empathy in the legal profession. This understanding motivated him to take up a position in the private sector. After nearly a decade of service with a top-tier boutique trial firm in Southern Minnesota, he decided to help clients a little differently and opened his own firm in 2008. Since its inception, Kohlmeyer Hagen has evolved into one of the busiest and largest family and criminal defense firms in Southern Minnesota. Jason has been a prominent speaker at international conferences, sharing his insights on family law issues with the American Bar Association, MN State bar Association, MN Continuing legal Education and the American Association of Justice. Since 2010, he has dedicated his practice exclusively to Family Law, helping clients navigate through challenges related to divorce, spousal support, child custody, and farm and business divorces. Area of Practice: Employment Law Meagan Koontz is an associate, practicing general litigation with the firm. Ms. Koontz’s practice covers all facets of employment law. She represents employers and employees in matters of wrongful discharge, discrimination, retaliation, sexual harassment, hostile work environment, misclassification, and wage and hour violations in single-plaintiff, class actions, and representative actions (such as PAGA actions). Ms. Koontz has trial experience in state court, including conducting witness examinations at trial, and she litigates matters in arbitration, conducts workplace investigations, and represents clients before the California Labor Commissioner’s Office and Civil Rights Department. Ms. Koontz also assists employers with drafting employee handbooks. Ms. Koontz is committed to pro bono and volunteer work in her community. She has represented pro bono clients regarding a variety of legal issues, including sexual assault, defamation, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotion distress. Ms. Koontz has also assisted individuals in upgrading military discharges before the Naval Discharge Review Board and expunging criminal records through the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. Ms. Koontz is a board member of the non-profit organization, Orange County Foundation for Oncology Children and Families, which coordinates camp activities for children battling cancer. She is also an adjunct mock trial professor at Southwestern Law School. In her free time, Ms. Koontz enjoys live music, art museums, and spending time at the beach near her home in Venice.
