Mel E. Myers
Distinguished Lawyer
Tax Law

75 Livingston Ave, Roseland, NJ 07068, USA

Mel E. Myers brings deep courtroom experience to his work as a litigator and tax controversy attorney. Mel represents developers, corporations, partnerships, and high-net-worth individuals as a litigator, often related to tax controversy or complex property tax appeals. The outcome of these cases often has a material impact on revenue and profitability for his clients. He also defends corporations, tax partnerships, and individuals during IRS or State of New Jersey audits and litigates tax disputes at the federal and state levels. As an experienced transactional tax attorney, Mel also handles transactional and deal-related tax matters. Transactional clients benefit by having corporate and tax issues addressed as they come up, rather than engaging a tax attorney separately. To approach and ultimately win a complex dispute, Mel carefully considers the timing, potential risks, and potential benefits of each motion and argument, for example when to join parties and claims in an ongoing dispute or determining which arguments will be most persuasive to the tribunal. The result: Mel is a strong and strategic advocate for his client. Mel’s clients also benefit from his extensive background in the real estate industry. Mel brings diverse litigation and transactional experience to his work as Partner, including five years in the Real Property division of the GSA, where government contract disputes often led to his leading litigation and trial work. Directly before joining McManimon, Scotland & Baumann, LLC, Mel worked in the tax group of a prestigious Wall Street law firm nationally recognized for its shareholder activism practice. He was a tax associate in the international tax department of a Big Four accounting firm, experience that enables him to quickly grasp the funds flow and financing aspects of a real estate transaction. Earlier in his career, Mel was a Tax Associate at a Houston, Texas firm. Before law school, he worked at Jones Lang LaSalle and the Urban Land Institute. Mel is an accomplished public speaker, having presented on diverse topics like the state taxation of oil and gas pipeline networks and litigating transfer pricing disputes. He has spoken at the American Bar Association, as well as at state bar association events.
